Hi, I’m Papa Phil, the founder of a space called Stock Talk. I combine my decades in Finance, Entrepreneurship & Technology with my passion and curiosity, to make it easier for people to invest or trade.

This article is NOT for the bit heads; it is for you!

Quantum computing is a new kind of supercomputer that uses the principles of quantum mechanics to perform calculations. Unlike traditional computers, which use bits that can only be either a 0 or a 1, quantum computers use qubits.

The Difference Between Bits and Qubits

A traditional bit is like a light switch: it can be either on or off, 0 or 1, but never at the same time. A qubit, on the other hand, is like a spinning coin. While it’s spinning, it’s not strictly heads or tails; it’s in a state of superposition, meaning it’s a combination of both states at once. This ability to exist in multiple states at the same time allows a single qubit to hold more information than a traditional bit.

When you measure a qubit, its “collapsing” into a single state (either a 0 or a 1), just like a spinning coin eventually lands on heads or tails.

In a field obsessed with “potential,” D Wave prefers results you can deposit in the bank.

D Wave Quantum is not just another player in quantum computing. It is the trailblazer that brought quantum machines into the commercial spotlight. Founded in 1999, D Wave laid the groundwork for the first quantum machines sold, not theoretical pipe dreams but real, functioning hardware ordered by Lockheed Martin in 2011. That earns a tip of the hat right away, even before we get to brag about its technology.

What gives D Wave its swagger is quantum annealing, a specialized method that solves optimization tasks today, not someday. Think supply chains, scheduling, logistics. This is quantum computing you can actually use, not just marvel at. Their Advantage Two processor, for instance, boasts over four thousand four hundred qubits and clocks massive speed gains, solving complex lattice problems up to twenty five thousand times faster than previous versions. That is not future talk, that is now talk.

Meanwhile, Righetti (competitor) is chasing the holy grail, universal gate based quantum systems. Admirable, but still very much in the “la-bor-a-tory”, much like the Monster Mash, and Gene Wilder, and Marty Feldman, but I digress.

Independent tests using the QAOA algorithm showed D Wave’s 2000Q finding the optimal solution with a 99.6 percent success rate. Righetti, by contrast, scored a pitiful 0.001 percent. D Wave also solved one hundred two problem copies in parallel. That is tens of millions better throughput. That is real juice, not vaporware.

Beyond the technology, the market likes D Wave’s style. Their stock is up more than ninety percent in 2025, the top performer among quantum stocks. They are increasing research and development and exploring acquisitions to move into gate model hybrid territory. Meanwhile, Righetti’s revenue is bumpy and falling, despite some clever engineering, though they keep fighting and credit where it is due.

What makes D Wave even more compelling is its pragmatic approach to commercialization. They are not promising the moon while quietly hoping physics catches up. They are delivering solutions today that tackle messy, real-world problems in transportation, manufacturing, finance, and drug discovery. When a technology starts solving bottlenecks for Fortune 500 companies instead of just winning headlines in scientific journals, it has moved into a league of its own.

Another advantage is D Wave’s commitment to a hybrid future. While their quantum systems already outperform in certain categories, they are actively developing capabilities to work alongside gate model systems. This “best tool for the job” approach means they are not stuck defending one ideology in a rapidly evolving field. That flexibility could prove to be their ace in the hole as quantum computing moves toward broader adoption.

In short, D Wave delivers credible, usable quantum today. It scales big, it performs under real workloads, and it generates revenue in a sector where most competitors are still struggling to turn prototypes into products. That is like bringing home the bacon while your rival is still trying to figure out how to crack the egg. Papa Phil says that is the kind of quantum company you keep in your portfolio and talk about over dinner.

Results are not typical. I teach methods that have made other traders’ and investors’ money, but that does not guarantee you will make money. Success in trading and investing requires work and dedication. Past performance does not indicate future results. All trading and investing carries risk.
